Event

CAMMS2007

A vast amount of multimedia information is produced and communicated daily, significantly enhancing both the work and leisure experiences of people. The selection and presentation of the most appropriate content becomes a rather complicated task. Information and communication technology is aiming at the assistance of users by automating to a large degree the information discovery and presentation. In order to do so efficiently, the user context is acquired, analyzed and compared against accessible content, thus supporting the selection of the most appropriate multimedia for the right time, place and user.

Context aware systems have been in the epicenter of many research efforts for a number of years. Recent advancements in sensor networks, context modeling and middleware allow now  for extremely interesting applications and services to be developed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Nevertheless there are still many open issues to be resolved when it comes to the collection of context information (from physical, virtual or logical sensors) and its exploitation for multimedia delivery. Context awareness is considered by many as a prerequisite for multimedia services when it comes to multi-platform and mobile environments, in order to achieve an acceptable degree of usability; due to the inherent limitations of the devices and complexity of some services, content adaptation based on the user profile and current settings/situation will increase the market penetration of mobile multimedia services and help incorporate them in a complementary fashion in existing infrastructures. In addition for context-aware multimedia services to become an everyday reality issues related to the security and privacy protection need to be resolved. The collection of personal data through sensors (e.g. in a personal area network) and the communication of such data over public networks poses new challenges and demands on both applications and infrastructure.

This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both the academia and the industry to exchange views, issues and novel ideas on context aware multimedia systems and applications. The workshop will take place in the framework of the MobiMedia 2007 Conference in Nafpaktos Greece.

Date: August 28th 2007

Time: 09:00 - 17:30

Introduction

Contact person:

Dr. Athanasios  Demiris

The workshop will focus on the presentation of the enabling technology for context aware multimedia systems, but also on successful applications of the technology in various domains. The aim of the workshop is to combine innovative research and successful implementation, thus bringing together academics and industry practitioners.

A non exhaustive list of representative keywords follows:

· Context models for multimedia communications (ontologies, logic-based etc.)

· Multimedia content filtering

· Recommendation engines and context reasoning

· Context-based content adaptation

· Sensor networks

· Context middleware

· Security and privacy in context aware applications

· Context aware applications for nomadic users

· Context aware applications in the extended home environment

· Usability issues addressed by context aware systems

· Context awareness and multimedia standards (extensions, ongoing work etc.)

The workshop will host presentations of original, unpublished contributions, subject to peer-review. The papers will be published in the MobiMedia Conference Proceedings.
