Special Session
Multimedia in HMI - Human Machine Interaction
collocated with MOBIMEDIA - 7th International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference
It is a matter of fact that the interaction between humans and the environment through appropriate equipments (HMI - Human Machine Interaction) heavily relies on multimedia communications, which are frequently carried out in mobile scenarios. In this scenario, interaction improvements can be obtained by presenting to the user the multimedia content which guides the user to the functionalities he will be very likely to select on the basis of the situational context, while keeping however the user in control of the situation.
The ultimate goal of this special session is then to show future developments related to platforms for building embedded products that capture and act upon user intentions thereby taking into account the user’s context (i.e. user environment and all the factors which will influence the user performance) and state (i.e. aspects determining the ability of the user to perform in a given situation). The challenge is to seamlessly access relevant multimodal information in a context-sensitive way. In particular domains users receive alerts and notifications via a multimodal interface which selects the appropriate modality on the basis of the context and the user state.
For instance, in the automotive domain, new Infotaiment systems will integrate information from various sources (camera, physiological parameters, etc.) to proactively present decision support information, at the right level of detail according to the context, by discarding annoying or distracting low level information. Currently these types of systems are mobile devices integrated in the car context.
In this special session we welcome studies showing new approaches to multimedia processing, retrieval, presentation and transmission in HMI communications. Demonstrators, architecture for multiple instantiations for different domains such as avionics, automotive and emergency management are more than welcome.
