Special Session
Mobile Visual Search
collocated with MOBIMEDIA - 7th International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference
The widespread proliferation of camera enabled mobile devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs or tablets, unveils a set of novel usage scenarios for visual search applications. The deployment of such services on the mobile environment implies some technical challenges. For instance, a visual search application requires that certain information about the query image being transferred to a server. When performing this operation over wireless links, the system’s performance is significantly affected by the amount of information required. The usage of condensed digital summaries, such as fingerprints, image signatures or compact visual descriptors can be used to reduce data rates and improve performance of mobile visual search applications.
The goal of the special session is to bring together researchers and practitioners from both industry and academia to discuss latest advances in design of algorithms and systems for mobile visual search. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: state of the art on mobile visual search, algorithms and data structures for generating and encoding condensed digital summaries such as image signatures and compact visual descriptors, performance evaluation methodologies, test collections and standardization activities.
The special session aims to receive both original technical research papers, state-of-the-art and survey papers in the mentioned areas. They will be peer-reviewed and will integrate a program together with invited presentations.
