Abstract
This tutorial will present the technology trends in the field of terrestrial broadcasting in Europe. The tutorial will review the current state-of-the-art, showing a picture of the different standards and frequency bands for mobile, fixed, cabled and satellite broadcast systems. The tutorial will provide an overview of the future standards for terrestrial broadcasting, emphasizing the technologies enable an optimization of the use of the spectrum assinged to broadcasting in the UHF band. The new services upcoming in the following years (enhanced HDTV formats and 3DTV) will be also covered. A section will be dedicated to mobile and portable services. Finally, an overview of the potential usage scenarios of the UHF broadcast band will be given, showing the pros and cons of each use case and the possible implications in the broadcast services as we know them today.
